Home Depot Return Policy
The Bottom Line
Most Home Depot purchases can be returned within 90 days with a receipt. Major appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, OTR microwaves) are the big exception — you have 48 hours from delivery to report damage or defects. Home Depot credit card holders get a full 365 days on most items.

How To
- Bring the item (unused, with accessories and packaging) to any Home Depot store.
- Bring your receipt, the credit card used for purchase, or your order confirmation. A photo ID is required if you have no receipt.
- For major appliances, do not bring the appliance to the store — call 1-800-455-3869 within 48 hours of delivery (weekends excluded).
- Note: Items purchased with eStore Credit must be returned in store, not by mail.
Watch Out For
- Major appliance window is 48 hours, not 90 days. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, and OTR microwaves: report damage or defects within 48 hours of delivery (weekends excluded) by calling 1-800-455-3869. Missing that window means no return or exchange.
- Special orders may carry a 15% restocking fee. Special-ordered items may be subject to a 15% restocking fee and must be returned to the store where you placed the order.

What you can and can’t return
Most Home Depot purchases are returnable within 90 days unused and with proof of purchase. Several categories have shorter windows: furniture, tractors, electronics, and gas-powered equipment are 30 days; dehumidifiers, window air conditioners, and gas generators are 7 days. Items in these shorter-window categories must also be in original factory-sealed packaging.
Items that cannot be returned: gift cards and store credits, whole house generators, utility trailers, cut flowers, labor, delivery, and installation services, paint samples, tinted paint, and custom or made-to-order products.
Major appliances: the 48-hour rule
Refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, and over-the-range microwaves get a 48-hour damage and defect reporting window measured from delivery, with weekends excluded. Call 1-800-455-3869 — not your local store — within that window. Do not attempt to return a major appliance to the store floor.
Returns without a receipt
Home Depot can look up purchases using the credit card used for the transaction or your MyHD account. If there is no record of the purchase, you will receive store credit at the lowest advertised price for that item, and you will need to show a photo ID. Stores may limit how many no-receipt returns they accept.
Credit card holders get a full year
If you paid with a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, Home Depot Pro Xtra Credit Card, or a Commercial Account, your return window extends to 365 days on most items. The shorter windows (30-day, 7-day, 48-hour) still apply to those specific product categories regardless of payment method.
Refund timing
In-store refunds are generally immediate. For mail-back returns, allow up to 7 business days after Home Depot receives the package. Large-item pickup returns can take up to 21 business days. Major appliance exchanges take up to 12 business days. After Home Depot processes the refund, your bank may take an additional 10 business days (credit or debit cards) or up to 30 business days (prepaid debit cards and PayPal) to post the credit.
Cash refunds over $1,000
If your original payment was cash or a cash equivalent and your refund exceeds $1,000, Home Depot may issue a check instead of returning cash at the register.
